Four Things You Should Know About Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury doesn’t necessarily involve a lacerated spinal cord. The injury is more commonly caused by discs or bone compressing the spinal cord.

•The injured area of the spinal cord does not die and lead to paralysis. Actually, the spinal cord remains alive but is cut off from the body due to injury.

•Many spinal cord injuries do not cause any paralysis. In some cases the paralysis will resolve when the spinal cord heals. In other cases, there is no paralysis and sometimes there is only tingling and numbness.

•Not everyone who sustains a fractured spine will have a spinal cord injury. The spine protects and prevents injury to the spinal cord.
