Tyhme Thompson shares her experience of being seriously injured in an ATV accident that left her with a complete spinal cord injury and paraplegia. While riding with friends, the ATV rolled on a hill and landed on a pile of rocks, shattering her spine in several places. She recalls waking up on the ground with an unusual sensation that she later realized was the onset of paralysis. Her injuries were so severe that she was airlifted to Toronto for emergency medical care.

Tyhme explains that recovering from a catastrophic spinal cord injury requires far more than medical treatment. She emphasizes the importance of having experienced legal representation to help secure the resources and support needed for long-term recovery. She says her legal team understood spinal cord injuries, communicated effectively with insurance companies, and helped ensure she received the care and accommodations she required.

Her recovery included extensive home modifications, such as creating a wheelchair-accessible kitchen with lowered countertops and cabinetry. She also describes the freedom that came with obtaining an accessible vehicle, allowing her to regain a sense of independence and normalcy. Reflecting on her journey, Tyhme encourages others with catastrophic injuries to ask for help and trust the support available to them. She believes having the right team in place can make a significant difference in rebuilding life after a serious spinal cord injury.
