Why Do We Have a Brain Injury Awareness Month in Canada?

Each year in Canada, more than 20,000 people are hospitalized for traumatic brain injuries, which can range from mild to severe and include concussions. 452 Canadians suffer a serious traumatic brain injury every day, amounting to nearly one person every 3 minutes.

Brain Injury Awareness is vital in Canada because brain injuries affect thousands of people each day, often resulting in invisible disabilities that are often misunderstood or overlooked.

Raising awareness helps reduce stigma, promotes prevention through education about common causes like falls and vehicle accidents, and highlights the need for better access to healthcare, rehabilitation and support services for survivors and their families.

Increased awareness drives important research and policy changes aimed at improving treatment options and creating a more inclusive society that understands and accommodates those living with brain injury.
