What is the Certified Specialist Program?
The Law Society of Ontario awards the Certified Specialist designation to lawyers who meet a high standard of competence in a particular area of law. To be eligible, a lawyer must have:

  • At least 7 years of legal experience
  • Significant involvement in the area of civil litigation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of both the law and ethical responsibilities
  • Successfully completed a thorough evaluation process and ongoing annual renewal requirements

Lawyers who earn this designation are recognized for their proven experience and commitment to continued learning within their field.

Why It Matters

  • Assessed Competence: The designation provides clients with confidence that the lawyer’s skills and knowledge have been formally evaluated.
  • Specialized Experience: Certified specialists have dedicated a minimum of five years to litigation work, including trials, mediations, arbitrations, and tribunal hearings.
  • Ongoing Development: To maintain certification, lawyers must complete additional continuing legal education each year.
