Head injuries may pose a significant risk of disability and fatality for both children and adults. These injuries can range from minor bumps, bruises, and cuts on the head to more severe conditions such as concussions, deep cuts, open wounds, fractured skull bones, and internal bleeding or brain damage.
The term “head injury” encompasses a wide range of injuries affecting the scalp, skull, brain, and underlying tissues and blood vessels. Depending on the severity of the trauma, these injuries may also be referred to as brain injuries or traumatic brain injuries (TBI’s). A substantial number of individuals are currently living with the consequences of a head injury, requiring assistance in their daily activities.
How Are TBI’s Diagnosed?
● Blood tests: A TBI blood test analyzes two proteins, UCH-L1 and GFAP, which are released by the brain into the bloodstream after even a mild concussion. This test can provide crucial information in determining medical care, effectively identifying individuals whose injuries require a CT scan.
● X-ray: This diagnostic test uses invisible electromagnetic energy beams to generate images of internal tissues, bones, and organs on film.
● Computed tomography scan (CT or CAT scan): This imaging procedure combines X-rays and computer technology to produce detailed images (slices) of the body, including the brain. CT scans offer higher levels of detail compared to general X-rays.
● Electroencephalogram (EEG): This procedure involves recording the continuous electrical activity of the brain using electrodes (small metal discs) attached to the scalp.
● Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): This diagnostic procedure employs a magnetic field and radio frequencies to generate detailed images of organs and structures within the body.
